My Background, Training and Experience

I have 30 years knowledge and experience of accounting from start to finish using recognised accounting software particularly Sage and am qualified to AAT standard.

After leaving school I started working in the family business which was a greeting cards print and publishing company; naturally I worked in accounts starting from the beginning and at the time attended a business studies course at the local technical college. I was there for nearly 20 years and during this time I became responsible for maintaining the accounts and providing management reports.

In 1999 I then became Company Secretary of Mansion House Caterers Ltd based at Broome Park, Nr Canterbury; my role included having sole responsibility in maintaining all aspects of accounting, to provide monthly financial reports and to manage the cashflow of the company. Other duties included running a weekly payroll including end of year returns, and all secretarial duties required in running an office. Whilst employed at MHC I studied and completed the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) course.

More recently I attended a course provided by HMRC on self assessment.

So to sum up I can provide a valuable service to small businesses who wish to concentrate on their key skills and to let me take care of the all important accounts. Some say they are a necessary evil but through forward planning is an essential aid to the running of the business.

I am an Incorporated Engineer registered with the Engineering Council. I used to repair guns in the Army for 15 years. When I decided to leave I wanted to work for myself so diversified slightly to repairing microwave ovens. I guessed I would have more customers with microwaves than guns! I started the Microwave Service Company in 1993 working from home in Folkestone. When the owner of my main competitor ABC Microwave decided to retire, I bought his business in Sellindge as a way of expanding.

Our shop / workshop is located on the main road through Sellindge. We offer an in home service or customers can bring their microwave oven into us for an estimate for a small refundable deposit. We cover all of Kent and customers bring their ovens from as far afield as Hampshire and Essex. We have an Engineer in a van who covers most of Kent for in home repairs and site visits for commercial customers.

I trained at the Cordon Bleu, worked in the city for 8 years for Linklaters & Paines one of the largest firms of solicitors. I spent almost 20 years in the States working in the hospitality industry then started my own inbound tour company and also put together fly/drive programmes for Kuoni and Travel 4 amongst others. I became the UK representative for Coastal South Carolina for a couple of years and ended up moving back to the UK. I worked for a bulk transportation company arranging their travel and exhibitions, was made redundant and decided on a change. The Hythe Handbook is an A5 full colour local community magazine that is well respected and read by people young and old throughout Hythe. A publication released bi-monthly to everyone in the CT21 postcode and includes local stories and local events as well as low cost effective local business advertising. The Handbook grows almost entirely by word of mouth, and has many long term advertisers and story writers due to the reflection of success they have from the Handbook. 9,000 copies of every issue are distributed by the Royal Mail to all homes and businesses so it’s read by most people in and around Hythe.
